Cold Climate Mini Splits

Cold climate mini splits keep heating when it's well below freezing outside. Every system in this collection is rated to heat at outdoor temperatures of -13°F or colder, and many are rated to -22°F. They're a good fit for cabins, garden rooms and homes in northern and mountain regions, where a standard heat pump loses capacity or shuts off.

What "cold climate" means here

  • Extreme cold (heats to -22°F): hyper heat systems with a base pan heater to stop ice build-up. These include the ACiQ Extreme series and most Senville heat pumps.
  • Cold climate (heats to -13°F): systems such as the ACiQ Essentials and Standard multi-zone heat pumps, for regions with occasional deep cold.

A heat pump's rating is the lowest outdoor temperature it can still heat at. Its output drops as it gets colder, so in very cold regions size up or plan for backup heat.

Choosing a system

  • One room: a single-zone wall mount. About 9,000 BTU covers 250–400 sq ft, 12,000 BTU covers 400–600 sq ft and 18,000 BTU covers 600–1,000 sq ft. These ranges assume good insulation, so size up for poor insulation or lots of glass.
  • Several rooms: a multi zone mini split runs 2 to 5 indoor units from one outdoor condenser.
  • Line sets and mounts: see line sets and accessories. In snowy areas, mount the condenser on a wall bracket or stand so it sits above the snow line.

Frequently asked questions

Do mini splits work in cold weather?

Yes. Cold climate heat pumps are built to heat at sub-zero temperatures. Every system here is rated to heat at -13°F or colder, and the -22°F systems are made for the harshest winters.

Do I need backup heat?

It depends on your climate and the building. Heating output falls as outdoor temperatures drop, so in places that regularly reach the low end of a unit's rating, many owners keep a small backup heater or choose a larger system. A licensed HVAC technician can size the system for your space.

What's the difference between ACiQ Standard and Extreme?

The Standard series heats down to -13°F. The Extreme series heats down to -22°F and adds a base pan heater and coil protection for harsh winters.

Can I install a cold climate mini split myself?

Mini split installation involves refrigerant connections and high-voltage wiring, so plan on a licensed HVAC technician, and check whether your area needs a permit.
