Gym Room Sizes

Sizes run from compact rooms under 100 sq ft up to nearly 500 sq ft for a full home gym with room to move.

  • About 120 sq ft: a bench, dumbbells or one cardio machine.
  • 200 sq ft and up: a squat rack plus cardio, with room to move around the bar.
  • 300 to 500 sq ft: a full gym with several stations, open floor space and storage.

Planning Your Backyard Gym

Heavy racks and plates need a level, solid base, so plan your foundation before the building arrives. Add electrical for lights and fans, and a mini-split if you want to train year-round. Tell us what you lift and what equipment you own, and we will size the room around it.

How much does a backyard gym shed cost?

Our backyard gym buildings start at $6,999, and most run $12,000 to $30,000. The largest models, like the 495 sq ft Dundee 90A, run about $38,400.

Is a 10x12 shed big enough for a home gym?

A 10x12 space (120 sq ft) fits a basic setup such as a bench, dumbbells, or one cardio machine. If you want a squat rack plus cardio, a room of 200 sq ft or more gives you more space, like the 233 sq ft ALU Concept 70B.

Can I build a gym in a shed?

Yes, as long as the floor and foundation can handle the weight of your equipment. Heavy racks and plates usually call for a solid slab or reinforced base, so check with a local contractor.

Is it cheaper to buy a gym shed kit or build your own?

A kit gives you a fixed price for the shell and skips the design work. Most Garden House 24 models in this collection ship as flat-packed DIY kits with the doors, windows, and floor included.

What are these gym buildings made of?

Most models are built from Nordic spruce with 44mm or 70mm solid log walls. The 44mm walls are about 1.73 inches thick and the 70mm walls are about 2.76 inches.

Do I need a permit for a backyard gym?

It depends on your city, the building size, and whether you add electrical. Check with your local building department and HOA before you order.
