Picnic Table Dimensions: Standard Sizes and Seating Guide

A standard picnic table is 6 or 8 feet long with a tabletop about 28 to 30 inches wide and roughly 28 to 30 inches tall. The attached benches sit around 17 to 19 inches off the ground. A 6-foot table seats about six adults, and an 8-foot table seats about eight. Allow 24 to 30 inches of table length per person.

This guide covers picnic table sizes, how many people each size seats, how much space you need around the table, and how to choose the right one for your yard.

Octagon Picnic Tables

Round and octagon tables put everyone face to face, which makes conversation easier. The LuxCraft Octagon Picnic Table is a low-maintenance poly option.

Low-Maintenance Poly Picnic Tables

Recycled poly lumber doesn't need staining and wipes clean easily. The LuxCraft 6' Rectangular Picnic Table keeps the classic shape in a weather-resistant material.

Tables With Separate Benches

Detached benches let guests slide in and out more easily and can be moved around the yard. They take a little more floor space than attached benches. The Westminster Horizon Teak Picnic Table Set with Benches is a teak option with separate benches.

How Much Space Do You Need Around a Picnic Table?

Plan for clearance behind each bench so people can step over and sit down comfortably.

  • Minimum: about 36 inches of open space past each bench.
  • Comfortable: about 48 inches, which also lets someone walk behind seated guests.

For a 6-foot table that's about 5 feet deep with benches, that means a level area roughly 10 to 13 feet long and 11 to 13 feet wide. Our guide to outdoor furniture layout for small decks and patios has more spacing tips.

Accessible Picnic Table Dimensions

If a guest uses a wheelchair, the table needs open knee space at one end or one side. U.S. Forest Service recreation guidelines for accessible picnic tables call for knee space at least 30 inches wide, 19 inches deep, and 27 inches high under the tabletop, with a clear 30-by-48-inch ground space in front of it. Many picnic tables can meet this by extending the tabletop past the bench at one end.

How to Choose the Right Picnic Table

  1. Count your usual crowd. Size for the group you host most often, not the biggest party of the year.
  2. Measure your space, including clearance behind the benches.
  3. Pick a material. Western red cedar is naturally rot resistant and looks warm and classic. Poly lumber needs almost no upkeep.
  4. Think about moving it. Wood tables are heavy. If you'll move it often, consider separate benches.
  5. Plan for shade. An umbrella hole, a nearby tree, or a pergola makes summer meals more comfortable.
