Outdoor Saunas

An outdoor sauna gives you a real Finnish-style sauna in your backyard: heat up after work, cool off in the yard or a cold plunge, and repeat. This collection brings together every outdoor sauna we carry, from compact two-person barrel saunas to larger sauna houses.

Outdoor Sauna Kits and Backyard Saunas

Barrel Saunas

The classic round shape heats quickly and sheds rain and snow. Golden Designs barrel saunas like the St. Moritz 2-person barrel sauna start under $7,000, with 4- and 6-person sizes available.

Cabin and Barn Saunas

Square cabin and barn-style saunas such as the Golden Designs Loviisa, Kaskinen and Vorarlberg look like a small garden building and offer more headroom. Hybrid models combine a traditional heater with infrared panels.

Sauna Houses and Sauna Rooms

For a dedicated wellness building, our Garden House 24 sauna houses, like the Sauna Tuuli 90, run from about 46 sq ft to about 690 sq ft, with solid spruce walls. Compact designs such as the Box Sauna and Versa Sauna fit smaller yards.

How to Choose an Outdoor Sauna

• Capacity: plan on about 2 people for occasional use and 4 to 6 if you want to share with family or friends.
• Heat type: traditional sauna stoves give hot, steamy Finnish heat; infrared and hybrid models warm up faster at lower air temperatures.
• Power: most electric heaters need a dedicated 240V circuit, so budget for an electrician.
• Foundation: set your sauna on a level concrete pad, pavers or a compacted gravel base.
• Permits: larger sauna buildings, and any sauna with new electrical work, may need a permit. Check with your local building department first.

Outdoor Sauna FAQs

1. How much does an outdoor sauna cost?
Our outdoor saunas start at $6,999 for a 2-person barrel sauna. Barrel, cabin and barn saunas run about $8,000 to $29,000. Larger sauna houses run $13,288 to $53,000. Add a foundation, electrical work and delivery.

2. Is it cheaper to buy or build an outdoor sauna?
Building can save on materials, but a kit includes a matched heater, benches and a tight door seal. Getting those right is hard on a DIY build. For most buyers, a kit is the safer and faster route.

3. Is an outdoor sauna worth it?
For regular users, yes. A backyard sauna is ready when you are, and many owners use it several times a week, especially in cold weather. The key is picking the right size and heater for your household.

4. What is the difference between an indoor and outdoor sauna?
Outdoor saunas are built to handle weather. They have weather-resistant exteriors, roofing and outdoor-rated electrical. Several models in this collection are rated for both indoor and outdoor use.

5. Do outdoor saunas use a lot of electricity?
It depends on the heater size and how often you use it. Traditional heaters draw more power while heating up than infrared panels. Each product page lists the heater and electrical requirements.

6. Do I need a permit for a backyard sauna?
It depends on your city. Electrical hookups usually need a permit, and larger sauna houses may count as accessory buildings. Check our permit guide.
